What happened

The Trump administration argued in federal court that DOJ letters threatening states over their voter rolls have no independent legal effect. The position was aimed at defeating an election interference lawsuit filed by Democrats. Democrats are seeking a restraining order in Washington, D.C., barring the administration from interfering in states' ability to conduct the midterms.1

DOJ has sued California to force it to set aside 20,000 ballots and identified another 17,000 people it claims are illegally registered there. DOJ preemptively sued Alaska to block certification of U.S. Senate results if the Republican incumbent loses.1
