What happened

Wisconsin election officials are divided over whether unarmed ICE and FBI agents may observe voting at polling places this November. The Wisconsin Elections Commission issued guidance that says such agents must follow the same rules as other observers. Dane County officials, in an Oct. 15 email to the commission, argued the language could be read as permitting armed ICE agents inside polls in violation of federal law.1

The commission approved the guidance less than three weeks before Election Day after receiving hundreds of questions from local clerks.1
