What happened

Federal prosecutors charged 18 immigrants with illegal voting in North Carolina, less than a month after announcing similar charges against a dozen others. The new charges are spread across the state, nine in the Eastern District, five in the Middle District and four in the Western District. Prosecutors alleged defendants illegally registered or cast ballots in previous elections including the 2024 presidential election.1

The U.S. Justice Department is also preparing to send federal election monitors to Wake, Alamance and Mecklenburg counties for Tuesday's elections.1
