What happened

The Public Interest Legal Foundation filed a Help America Vote Act complaint against the North Carolina State Board of Elections after finding thousands of apparent duplicate and triplicate voter registrations in the statewide voter database. PILF identified 3,674 matched-set records ahead of the 2026 general election, up from more than 1,200 apparent duplicates the group found earlier this year. Research director Logan Churchwell said the records stem from the same person registering multiple times under name variations, missing identifying information, or differences in punctuation and spacing.1
