What happened

The Phoenix Fire Department trained all of its members to respond to ballot drop box fires ahead of Election Day. Captain Rob McDade said crews will open the box, spray dry chemical, and close it to cut off oxygen, then treat the scene as an arson investigation. The department used dry chemical extinguishers rather than water to preserve ballots.1

No specific active threats were currently identified in the Valley. The department pointed to prior incidents including a Los Angeles drop box fire this year, two Oregon and Washington drop box fires in 2024, and a Phoenix mail collection box fire less than two weeks before the 2024 election.1
