What happened

Several organizations and two absentee voters asked a federal judge on October 14 to halt new absentee ballot restrictions in North Carolina. The state board of elections approved the changes on September 4, hours before North Carolina became the first state to mail out midterm ballots. The new rules require signature verification and disqualify ballots not sealed in an inner envelope.1

U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder heard arguments from plaintiffs' counsel Jacob Shelly, who warned that voters using nicknames, initials, or maiden names risk having ballots rejected without a chance to correct the error.1
